Support for veterans and the armed forces community
We recognise the valuable contribution that our armed forces communities give to our organisation. Whether this be in the shape of reservists who support our regular forces or our veterans who are able to bring a wealth of experience, knowledge and skills to our Trust.
We were one of the first NHS Trusts accredited as Veteran Aware by the Veterans Covenant Healthcare Alliance (VCHA) in recognition of our commitment to improving NHS care for veterans, reservists, members of the armed forces and their families. The Trust also signed the armed forces covenant and we hold the Gold Award under the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS).
We have Trust champions; management champion, clinical champion and HR Lead and have vast support from the board including our non-executive directors.
We have an armed forces and veterans staff association. Chief Executive, James Duncan is our Executive Sponsor. The association provides support to staff who are connected with the armed forces. It is open to staff who are part of the reserves or cadets, who have served within any branch of the armed forces, and those with family or partners who are currently serving or veterans. Staff with responsibilities for the Trust’s specialist services for veterans are also involved.
Together our champions work to promote the forces and to ensure that both staff and patients are supported. Find out more about each of our champions:

Military Covenant and Employers Recognition Awards
The Trust has signed the armed forces covenant. It’s a pledge from us that we acknowledge and understand that those who serve or have served and their families should be treated with fairness and respect in their communities. Our commitment and support to the armed forces community has been recognised by receiving the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) Gold Award, something we are immensely proud of.
Armed Forces Declaration
By signing the declaration, staff will be eligible for specialist support such as extra help for relatives and staff on mobilisation and policy support and access to the Trust’s Armed Forces Association.
OpCOURAGE
Reservists and veterans can also access Op COURAGE: The Veterans Mental Health and Wellbeing Service, offering specialist NHS support for mental health conditions and psychological trauma.
The service has been developed with veterans, for veterans. Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust is the lead provider of Op COURAGE for the North of England, working in partnership with other NHS Trusts and charities.
Step into Health
Step into Health is a programme open to all service leavers, reservists, veterans, cadets, volunteers, and the families of all of these. We have pledged our support to the Step into Health programme and have a team of dedicated individuals that you can talk to about employment opportunities within our organisation. We can provide information on careers available, work placements, information days and provide job application guidance.
