Monkwearmouth Hospital
Monkwearmouth Hospital is on the northern outskirts of Sunderland, roughly a 10-minute walk from the Stadium of Light.
As well as the main hospital building, the Monkwearmouth Hospital site is made up of smaller wards and clinics too, including the new purpose-built Cleadon ward for older people with mental health difficulties.
Monkwearmouth Hospital provides a range of clinical services which include:
- Adult Services
- Learning Disability Services
- Older People’s Continuing Care Services
- Adult Rehabilitation Services
Some of our community services are also based at Monkwearmouth Hospital. See our service directory for more information.
The hospital is also home to NHS Sunderland Talking Therapies. This is a city-wide team that provides quick access to assessment and treatment for people with common, low to moderate mental health problems.
NHS Sunderland Talking Therapies is delivered in partnership between Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust, Sunderland Counselling Service and Sunderland and Washington MIND. Interventions are offered from a range of community venues across Sunderland including Sunderland and Washington MIND, Sunderland Counselling Services, Grange Park Clinic and GP practices.
In 2016 we opened the newly refurbished Cleadon Ward for older people with mental health difficulties. You can see a video about Cleadon’s opening on the Sunderland Echo website.
