The Kolvin Service (Aycliffe/Kyloe)

The following leaflets provide information that you may find useful about the Kolvin Service.

  • The Kolvin Service

The Kolvin Service is an adolescent forensic mental health service that provides services for young people within two Secure Children’s Homes (SCHs) in the North East of England.

These SCHs are Aycliffe Secure Centre and Kyloe House.

The Kolvin Service is part of wider provision of children and young people’s forensic mental health services delivered by Cumbria Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust (CNTW).

The aim of the Kolvin Service provision within the two SCHs is to ensure that young people are provided with specialist formulation, assessment and interventions responsive to their presenting needs.

The Kolvin Service multi-disciplinary team includes specialist input from psychologists, psychiatry, nursing staff, occupational therapy and speech and language professionals.

The Kolvin Service works collaboratively with multi-disciplinary agencies involved in the young person’s care. These disciplines include the SCH senior management team, residential team, education team, physical health team, substance misuse team, advocacy services and various other agencies that work within the setting.

The Kolvin Service also works collaboratively with Local Authority (LA) teams designated to the young people. The Kolvin Service ensures involvement of the young people in their care and liaises with carers and families to inform assessment, treatment and transitions.

  • SECURE STAIRS Framework

The SECURE STAIRS framework is a trauma-informed whole system approach to integrated care within the Children and Young People’s Secure Estate (CYPSE).

It draws from trauma systems therapy, Sanctuary Model, Enabling Environments (EE) initiatives and Psychologically Informed Planned Environments (PIPEs).

    The SECURE STAIRS objectives include:

    • integrated and consistency of care
    • staff trained and supported in SECURE STAIRS whole-system model
    • comprehensive formulation for each young person
    • development of individual goals for each young person
    • intervention pathways responsive to the young person’s needs
    • develop an evidence base to support evaluation

The Kolvin Service collaboratively leads on implementation of the Secure Stairs framework within both SCHs. This role involves development of a Secure Stairs local implementation team that involves senior management, case workers, education, physical health, substance misuse team and senior clinicians from the Kolvin Service.
