Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

If you’ve looked on our other web pages and still have questions, you might find the answers on this page.

Is the service free?

Yes. North Cumbria Talking Therapies is a free NHS service for adults who are registered with a GP in North Cumbria.

Can you write me a letter to support my housing/welfare benefits/court case?

We are only funded to offer therapies and treatments. We are not an occupational health service. So, we can’t offer these letters as part of our service. Your GP may be able to write you a letter, but they may charge for this. You can also speak with someone at the Citizens Advice Bureau or local benefits, housing or legal advice charities.

Will my children get taken off me if I come for therapy?

No. Having a mental health problem does not mean that you are not able to look after your children. We will need to ask you some questions about you and your children’s safety. We’ll also ask if you need any help looking after your children. If we do have any concerns about your children’s safety, we have to act on these. But just receiving mental health support does not mean social care or other services will get involved. We work with lots of parents who successfully get therapy while looking after their families.

Can I be forced to go to therapy?

No one can force you to do therapy. You can ask to leave our service at any time. If you feel that someone is trying to force you to go to therapy, please tell us as soon as possible so we can help keep you safe. Therapy only works if you want to do it.
